Appelbaum uses color infrared photography, originally developed to detect camouflaged targets in surveillance and forensic investigations, to capture these highly surveilled individuals in relaxed, everyday settings. Laura Poitras is a filmmaker and director of Citizenfour, an award-winning documentary on Edward Snowden. She is depicted here in her home in Berlin, where she moved to avoid scrutiny from the US intelligence services.
