Ai Weiwei (Bejing), 2015

Appelbaum uses color infrared photography, originally developed to detect camouflaged targets in surveillance and forensic investigations, to capture these highly surveilled individuals in relaxed, everyday settings.  Ai Weiwei is a Chinese artist and activist. His open criticism of the Chinese government in his artwork and writings resulted in his previous arrest and close surveillance. Here he is captured in his garden in Beijing in a rare moment of relaxation.
