The fungus Isaria sinclairii lives off cicadas. The spores attach to the cicadas underground, colonize the nymphs, overwhelm them, and eventually sprout out of their heads. The X-ray shows the corpse of a cicada nymph, fully overtaken by the fungus. For centuries this fungus has been used in traditional Chinese medicine as an eternal youth nostrum, and more recently as the active substance in the first pill to treat MS.
