In the series of black-and-white photo collages from the 1980s “Phantom Limb,” objects such as cameras, binoculars, electric plugs, clocks, and televisions replace the limbs of technologically mutated women. The series foresees an imminent revolution in the merging of humans, interfaces, and machines. Camera Woman cuts the kind of woman’s body favored by mass media out of its rote role of performance, reclaiming the camera-eye decades before social media, smartphones, and selfie feminism.
