Brus Rubio Churay is an Indigenous contemporary artist and activist who belongs to the Murui and Bora Peoples of the Peruvian Amazon. Introduced to the arts by his father, also a painter and an indigenous community leader, Rubio’s works draw upon the mythology, history, and culture of the Murui. “All of this is part of my existence, of my way of thinking, feeling and looking at the world,” Rubio says, “My paintings also address social, historical and political themes that have affected my people and Amazonia in general, such as environmental contamination, the crimes of the rubber barons against my ancestors, corruption, and the outside agencies that impose development programs without understanding the local reality.
