Another Green World
Igor Grubic
February 18 - April 15, 2023

NOME is pleased to announce a solo exhibition with Igor Grubić. Another Green World will be the artist’s first solo exhibition in Berlin.

Igor Grubić is one of Croatia’s most accomplished and internationally acclaimed artists and is known for using art as a tool for activism. His photographs, films, and symbolic actions in public space have addressed social, political, and economic concerns, often referring to significant historical events and drawing attention towards marginalized groups and unlikely heroes.

Grubić’s exhibition at NOME will include selections from two recent bodies of work realized in Italy that draw upon the transgressive power of poetic language to address issues related to environmental destruction and animal liberation. The photographic series Do Animals…? comprises photographs of vacant slaughterhouses in Northern Italy overwritten with the artist’s provocative questions about animals’ rights, desires, and self-understanding. The project, which also includes a film, was created during the artist’s residency at RAVE – East Village in Trivignano Udinese. Another Green World is a the title of a photo series and a public art project curated by Adriana Rispoli and organized by the Morra Foundation in the Villa Comunale in Naples in 2021. Grubić’s micropolitical interventions on trees, statuary, and neoclassical architecture transform the city’s most central historical public garden into a monumental display to express different forms of emergency that have become even more urgent with the pandemic: the need for a return to nature, community life, solidarity, and responsibility.

Igor Grubić (b.1969, Zagreb) lives and works in Zagreb. Grubić represented Croatia at the 57th Venice Biennale and has participated in Manifesta 4 and 9, the 11th Istanbul Biennial, and the 20th Gwangju Biennale, as well as in numerous film festivals. His work has been acquired by TATE Modern, the Museums of Contemporary Art in Belgrade and Zagreb, MWW – Wroclaw Contemporary Museum, Kunsthaus Zürich, FRAC Champagne Ardenne, Kontakt Collection Vienna, and Kadist in San Francisco, among others. Selected group shows include “Bigger Than Myself,” MAXXI, Rome (2021); “The Value of Freedom,” Belvedere 21, Wien (2019); “Zero Tolerance,” MoMA PS1, New York (2014); “East Side Stories,” Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2012); “Moving Forwards, Counting Backwards,” MUAC, Mexico City (2012); and “Gender Check,” mumok, Vienna (2009). His films have received various European awards. The artist also writes and produces socially committed documentaries and reportages.
