Specimen-9 ,2013
Kirsten Stolle

Gouache, ink, graphite on Yupo

37 x 29,5 cm

Specimen Series (2013) renders speculative micro-organisms in watercolor. Stolle painted the series while reading Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring (1962), about the detrimental effects of pesticides on eco-systems and human biology, and while thinking about unseen interferences between interior and exteriority. The forms resemble organic cells and bacteria under a microscope; they porous and seeping, overflowing of authorial boundaries.
