For Hard Copy, Matthew Plummer-Fernandez produced four 3D prints of popular cultural icons, remixed and distorted in a computer modelling program, alongside the sculptures’ translations into .png image files. The polyamide figures suggest the strange futures of these familiar cartoons – whose images are reproduced widely on file-sharing sites – and stand as emblems for questions of copyright and participatory internet culture. The iconic outline of Mickey Mouse continues to be protected by Disney under the Copyright Extension Act despite being almost a century old. Every Mickey superimposes every 3D file of Mickey Mouse that Plummer-Fernandez could find online.
